The Sagtevlei Trio

The Sagtevlei Trio began as a live recording of compositions by Alex van Heerden and Derek Gripper for string quartet with mouthbow, trumpet, voice and accordion. The resulting CD, dubbed “avant-goema” by the Mail and Guardian fused the fast rhythms of Cape Goema with the contemporary string quartet and free improvisation. Bassist Brydon Bolton joined two classical string players to complete the string quartet with Derek Gripper playing viola. Almost ten years later the trio reformed to perform one more concert at Artscape in Cape Town which was recorded by Alex Bozas. Alex van Heerden passed away two weeks after this memorable performance which became the CD “Ale!x.”
